William "Vernon"
Martin
Mar 15, 1949 — Jun 23, 2026
William “Vernon” Martin, 77, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, June 23, 2026 at Conway Medical Center. He was born March 15, 1949 in Hemingway, a son of the late Moses Walker Martin and Lillian Williams Martin.
He was also predeceased by his son, Barry Strickland and siblings, Frances Shoupe, Moses Walker “Bubba” Martin Jr., Virgie Stevens, John Allen Martin and Wanda Dean Martin.
Vernon was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to all he met. He was a member of Pauley Swamp Baptist Church, where he was a former deacon and taught Sunday School for many years. Vernon was a former medic for the US Army, serving as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division. He worked at Georgetown Steel Corporation, retiring from Safety Manager after thirty-three years. He was also a member of the Bucksport Water System Board, serving as Chairman for several of those years. From the lowest to the highest, he loved everybody by showing his love through his kindness and generosity. Working was his nature. He was his happiest working on and restoring old cars. He also loved watching NASCAR racing.
A Great man is one who leaves others at a loss after he is gone.
Mr. Martin is survived by his wife of forty-eight years, Kathy L. Martin; daughter, Heather Johnson (Rett); grandchildren, Maddie Grace Johnnson and Macy Grier Johnson; many special nieces and nephews that he loved like his children, along with many other family and friends who will miss him.
