Julian Odell Hughes walked into the arms of Jesus on Sunday, February 22, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Odell lived a life marked by faith, devotion to his family, and dedicated service to his country and community.

He was born on June 18, 1930 to Julian Walker Hughes and Julia Mae Calhoun Hughes. He was the devoted husband of Juanita Cooper Hughes for 76 wonderful years and a loving father to Julian O. Hughes, Jr. (Elaine), Glenn W. Hughes (Wanda), Julia H. Clardy (Wayne), and Linda H. Tanner (Ray, deceased). He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.

In addition to his parents, Odell was preceded in death by his son, Robert M. "Bobby" Hughes (Vicki); one grandson, Julian David Tanner; and one great-granddaughter, Ellie Walker Anderson; one brother, James Walker Hughes, and two sisters, Carolyn McLain and Delores Johnston.

Odell proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps, retiring in 1967. Following his military service, he worked with Horry County Code Enforcement until his retirement in 1992.

He enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, NASCAR racing, and watching Fox News. Most of all, he cherished time spent with his family.

Odell was a faithful member of Antioch Methodist Church, where he served his church family with dedication and love.

We will celebrate Odell's life on Thursday, February 26, 2026 at 11am at Antioch Methodist Church, with Reverend Richard ("Dickie") Knight and Reverend Darrell Ricketts officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service.
