Obituary

Joann G. Wiegand went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, October 7th, 2024.  She was born on September 14, 1936, in York, Alabama, her father, Irving Bobby Gibson and her mother, Flora Mae Hearn Gibson.

She graduated from Sumter County High School on May 27th, 1954, Sumter County, Alabama

She married William Earl Wiegand, Jr. on September 30, 1955, in her hometown. They had two children during their marriage of 40 years.  She had three brothers and five sisters:  Pat Cowan Gibson, Rex Arthur Gibson, Harrell Lott Gibson, Willie Mae Gibson Cameron, Myrtle Leona Gibson, Elizabeth "Betty" Gibson Walton, Mary Pearl Gibson and surviving sons William Earl Wiegand, III and Warren Emerson Wiegand and her sister Dorothea "Dottie" Lou Gibson Bechtel.

In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her 3 brothers and 5 sisters, she was predeceased by her husband, William Earl Wiegand, Jr.  Joann was a devoted member of First United Methodist Church where she served as a Sunday School Teacher for nearly 3 years and was a very enthusiastic and a reliable singer in the choir.  She was an extremely good cook of various delectable meals.  Family and friends were always amazed at the great tasty meals she prepared.  She was a dedicated piano player and loved music, the studies of Literature, Anthropology, Archaeology and art.  She had a tremendous amount of friends as a result of her Church, college, the Republican Party and other community enhancing groups and Real Estate sales.  She would always make someone smile with good, strong advice regarding life (referred to as "Pearls of Wisdom") and the Word of Almighty God and Jesus Christ.

She was a deeply devoted Republican and helped to create the Horry County Republican Party shortly after moving to Conway.  She was the first Woman Graduate of Coastal Carolina College.  She earned her "Bachelor of General Studies and Journalism on December 31st, 1973" in the topics of Archaeology and Anthropology from the University of South Carolina.  She attended and helped manage multiple Archaeological discovery sites and from her artifact findings was a major contributor to the early history of Horry County.  She was a proficient writer and wrote articles in the Sun News and the Horry Independent from time to time.  She was a South Carolina Notary Public.  On January 1st, 1958, The South Carolina Board of Education "The United Methodist Church" she received a Certificate of Recognition as an Educational Assistant.   In 2001 she was given a Disciple Award by the First Methodist Church of Marion South Carolina through Bible study.  She has been a devoted member and choir member of First United Methodist Church of Conway ever since she moved to Conway in 1955.   She was a former member of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and was a former member of the Horry County Historical Society.  She retired from Wiegand Real Estate, Inc. in October 2020 from being a very active Real Estate Saleslady.

She was a very loving Mother and her multiple of friends loved her very much.  She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held 7pm on Tuesday, October 22, 2024 at First United Methodist Church.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the commons area at the church.
