Obituary

James Monroe Gaskin, 92, of Galivants Ferry, SC, passed away on January 24, 2026. He was the son of Burke Ransom Gaskin, Sr. and Gladys Cleon Turner (of Moultrie, GA). He was a descendent of Ezekiel and Tallitha Gaskin of Kershaw County, SC.

James grew up as part of a farm family whose values of hard work and community responsibility he carried forward throughout his life.

He attended Aynor High School and Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, GA, and he graduated from Florida State University with a graduate degree in history.

James was a veteran, serving in the Navy as an aircraft mechanic during the Korean War and later serving in the Air Force. He taught high school in Marion and Loris, SC and later taught at Martin College in Pulaski, TN. After returning to his home in Galivants Ferry, James worked in construction as a carpenter, and in his later years worked as a night auditor in the hotel industry.

James is survived by his wife Anna Todt Gaskin, his daughter Tracy Joan Gaskin (Joseph Damiano), his son Ransome Tyree Gaskin, his sister-in-law Patsy Strickland Gaskin, and by his nieces and nephews: Matilda "Meg" Gaskin Tyree, Melissa Gaskin Tyree, William Ashley Gaskin and Thomas Jenkins.

He was predeceased by his parents, his sisters Ann Gaskin Bell and Alma King Jenkins Kiehler, his brother Burke Ransom "BR" Gaskin, Jr., his niece Cynthia Bell Ang, and his nephew Henry Bell.

James loved his family, his books, his music, genealogy, and sweet iced tea.

James wanted to express his appreciation to the Bojangles restaurant in Aynor, SC for their kindness over the years. The family would like to express our thanks to the nurses and staff at Lower Cape Fear Hospice who took care of James and the family with compassion and kindness during his final days.

At his request, no services will be held for James. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Salvation Army and the Horry County Memorial Library would be appreciated.
